Tweet - Building Leaders

 Building Leaders

It took a moment for me to fully process this quote. In my experiences of being a teacher and team leader, leadership has meant so much more than just relaying information from administration to my team. Good leaders want to build up others. They want the best for their team (and, in this case, the students as well).

Since becoming a team leader my second year of teaching, I have had many goals and aspirations for what kind of a leader I want to be.

I want to:
  • Create a safe and trusting space
  • Build my teammates to be the best versions of themselves
  • Identify goals and supports to make our students successful learners
  • Provide opportunities for ALL voices to be heard
  • Determine the assets that each member of the team brings
  • Enjoy our time and job
I have implemented specific roles for each team member to engage in during our meetings. The most important role, in my opinion, is the "Meeting Facilitator". This provides equal opportunity for each team member to lead the team through a successful meeting. I, as the team leader, do not know everything, nor do I make all the decisions. Creating this role has balanced our the voices throughout the meetings.

Similar to the above tweet, when people walk into our meetings, they are unable to determine who is leading the meeting.

  1. Hi Kylie, thank you for sharing that tweet! It made me think back to the days when I️ used to dance competitively. When we would train for a kick-line, my teacher would tell us over and over, "You are only as strong as the weakest link, it is your job to help build each other up!" It doesn't sound quite as uplifting next to the quote you shared, lol! But, I️ know she had the best intentions. In either case, these quotes are about leveling the playing field by highlighting each others strengths. I️ appreciate what you said about switching roles in meetings and giving everyone a chance to be the facilitator. Doing this can hold people accountable and give them an opportunity to practice their own leadership skills. I️ would love to start doing this with my team and see what changes it brings! Thanks for sharing!
